Our Board

New City Christian School, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is incorporated with the state of North Carolina.  Below you will find information about our board members. 

Cathy Heck, Chairman---Cathy has a Master's degree in parent/child nursing.  Before moving to Asheville she developed and taught an abstinence-based puberty education program still widely used in Cincinnati City Schools.  Cathy is married to Dr. Jeff Heck, a family physician and CEO of MAHEC.  They have five children. Cathy is also a facilitator for the Building Bridges program.

Rev. John Brewster, Vice-Chair---Rev. Brewster is the pastor of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and was a key leader in allowing New City to be started at Tabernacle.  He is married to Brenda and they have four children.  He is affectionately known as "Red Rooster" by our younger students who have trouble saying Reverend Brewster.

Edward Cocciadiferro, Treasurer--Edward has an MSEE and owns an engineering firm in Asheville, NC that specializes in product development for the semiconductor and petro-chemical industries. He is married and has two children who currently attend UNC Chapel Hill and TC Roberson High School. 

Coral Innes Jeffries, Founder--- Coral is the founder of New City.  She has a Masters degree in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health.  She has served on a task force for the Literacy Council of Buncombe County.  She is married to Dr. Brentley D. Jeffries and has four grown children. 

Mary Dorris---Mary has lived in Asheville for 19 years with her husband, Dr. Duncan Dorris.  They have 5 children. She has a B.A. in History from the University of Georgia and is a certified Academic Language Practitioner.  She has home-schooled her children for the last 18 years and tutored children with language- based learning difficulties. Mary and her family have been volunteers at New City for several years. She is excited about the mission of instilling knowledge, confidence and hope in the students served by the school.

Robyn Hester---Robyn has a BA in Middle Grades Education with an emphasis on Science from St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Before moving to Asheville, she taught for three years in the DeKalb County School System in Atlanta as a Math and Science teacher for 5th and 6th graders. Robyn also taught in the High Point School System for an additional three years as a Math and Science teacher for 6th graders. Robyn has four children who she has home-schooled for a total of twenty years with her husband Faison. 

Veechwin Li--- Veech has recently retired to the Asheville area after working his entire career in consumer packaged product companies focusing on international business management and strategic marketing. He has an undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and a MBA from Harvard Business School. He is married to Fran Johnson Li and now lives in Hendersonville, NC. In retirement, Veech has become involved in several Christ-focused ministries including Serge (formerly World Harvest Missions), Kairos Prison Ministry and Grace Community Church. 

Carol Mills --- Carol is a retired business owner and is active in the community. She serves on the boards of Asheville Community Theatre and Grove Park Sunset Mountain Neighborhood Association.  She was instrumental in starting a woman's golf league in Asheville. Carol and her husband Gary share a passion for golf and New City and enthusiastically co-chair New City's Annual Golf Tournament. 

Mary Sczudlo --- Mary is co-owner of Underground Fitness, a high intensity interval training (HIIT) gym in Asheville, NC. Prior to opening Underground Fitness Mary was the Director of Homeless Services for ABCCM. Mary has a BS in Accounting and Management from the University of Pittsburgh and an MBA from RIT.  Prior to joining ABCCM she worked turnarounds for various manufacturing companies, and retired from a fortune 500 Company headquartered in Charlotte. Mary has a passion to help people improve their lives.  She lives in Fletcher, NC with her husband Joe.  She has two daughters who also live in the Asheville area.

We would like to thank Dianne McGlen for her faithful service to New City Christian School as our first Board Chair and for believing in the mission of New City from the beginning.  She now resides in Greensboro, NC.

We also want to thank Randall Richardson, Dr. Brentley D. Jeffries, Sharon West, David Key, Portia White, Renee Brooks, Cassandra Wells, John Wood, Stanley Riordan, Laurel McClure, Bruce Goforth and Dr. John Grant for their past service on the board.
